ML is adding TV shows now?
|
|
I just got "Deadwood" recommended to me. One of the things that I liked about ML vs. competitors such as FilmAffinity is that it excluded TV shows. I've wondered several times (in the old forums) if miniseries should be included, but full-on TV series really never belonged. Yet now here one is. Is this a rabbit hole we really want to go down? I can't see many upsides to it.

I agree, I do not want T.V. shows to be rated and recommended on this site.

I have flagged it several days ago, but it's still here. Some TV shows have been pulled in the past like Band of Brothers and Firefly, but From Earth to Moon remains.
I rated Firefly before it was pulled and as a result my ratings count in "About My Ratings" is off by one compared to the total count at the top of the page.
This too I reported last July and was assured it would be fixed...still waiting for that to happen.

@mntwins: I agree, but as it is now, Deadwood (TV) is added as a movie. If such a feature were to exist, TV shows would have to be categorized as, well, TV shows. Until that happens, let's just not add any TV shows...
I'm guewssing it's a glitch. Somebody added it and more people voted it through -- without any Movielens staff noticing. In that case, it'll be gone soon. Or 'Movielens-soon' anyway ;) Until then, just vote 'hide it' on the Deadwood entry if it bothers you.

From the user's perspective, it might be advantageous to have television programs as a well-separated category, as I suspect that movie ratings will be helpful in generating recommendations for TV shows and vice versa. But, to do it properly, wouldn't you need to rate each television show on a season-by-season basis? This is the point where it starts to become ugly.
My interpretation of Netflix data is that people tend to rate television shows higher on average. Somehow they feel to me like they would behave differently from movies from a recommendation-generation standpoint. And maybe it's just not worth the effort.
I'm curious though... to those who don't want television shows on MovieLens: what do you dislike about this idea?

I don't have a problem with TV movie/miniseries recommendations. (As long as it's not one from the infinite landfill of teen-mom movies from lifetime). But a tv SHOW is another story. I don't care much for tv, and I get enough recommendations to ignore, over at netflix. I agree with 'drw', I also think tv shows are rated higher. This also applies to IMDB. If they included shows in their top 250, the first 10 would probably be tv shows.
