I compare it against others, all these movies are 4* so was this movie as good as them if so then it gets a 4* if it wasn't I'll look to the next rating and compare again.
I hate reading too many reviews before watching a movie, sometimes it influences you and makes you rate it slightly higher or lower than what it should be. Especially when reviews say its the best thing ever then its hard for the movie to live up to the hype.
most times i end up watching movies very late. by the time i watch, i would have had an idea about the general rating for the movie and that biases me.
I'm pretty strict, my ratings are based on how likely I will watch the movie multiple times. A five star movie means I will watch it over and over. A four star movie is a movie I will watch more than once. A three star movie is a movie I will watch once.
A two star movie was something I unfortunately watched
A one star movie is a movie I do not want to watch.

wish i rated my movies this way when i joined ML. i rated very generously, now i kind of want to restart
I only rate movies that I have watched. My rating of a movie tends to be along the lines of how much I would like to have "similar" movies recommended to me in the future.
based on how much i enjoyed the movie. i give 5 stars only when i like the movie extremely well... most movies i enjoy watching will go under 3 - 4.5 stars category.
