Good half, bad half.

Just saw The China Syndrome in a listing of movies with very few ratings, and I remembered how brilliant the first part of that film was, only for it to become just another disaster movie.
That made me remember Adaptation., the first half of which has some of the best writing, with a disapointing as hell last half, if only because I've seen The Player make the point so much better.
Any others like this?

"Full Metal Jacket"
Nearly everyone loved the first half that took place in bootcamp, but many lost interest when the setting changed to Vietnam.
I felt the same way upon early viewings, but just recently I watched the film on DVD after a 10 year hiatus and I've come to appreciate the second half for its gritty yet stylized take on the Vietnam war. The second half honestly has more than enough memorable scenes (the crazed chopper gunner, "me so horny" hooker, joker meeting the new platoon, the second hooker scene, the news interviews, the leapfrog formation sequence, the sniper attack, the sniper's demise) to hold its own.
