I have a sports-crazy 10-year old, and the previews suggest this might be a good movie, but I'd rather hear from someone who has seen it.

I would say that the blind side is suitable for a 10 year old. It has a bit of violence and sexual references, but nothing ridiculous.

Yes, it celebrates family values despite a little ghetto violence. An orphan is rescued off the streets and he magically unifies an family that might have gradually grown apart in its upper middle class materialism.
