A Public Service Announcement Concerning "Southland Tales"
[archived]
Um, I'm kind of running out of computer time and I've already gotten a lot of the vehemence out of my system, but I have a mission and feel it's very important, so let me just throw this out there really quickly:

Avoid "Southland Tales" like the plague. It's awful. As in, it's "Plan 9 from Outer Space" without the humor or the ironical humor. It's really bad.

Here's what I wrote at another forum to help sum it up:

Honestly one of the worst films ever made. Bad acting, bad story, bad meta, bad satire, beach-party imagery ad-nauseum, endless voice-over narration, no point, no drama, didn't go anywhere, bad soundtrack, extremely annoying in parts, mostly boring in others, bad sci-fi bullshit elements, and a two and a half hour playlength where an hour fifteen would have sufficed. Basically this movie boils down to two themes: California is stupid, and Bush is stupid. OOOO, big deal. I literally spent the entire length of the film waiting for it to go somewhere, only for it to do just the opposite of having a point. I honestly think he was aiming for camp, but mis-aimed and just hit so-bad-it's-bad.

I've even started a tally: 3 people saved from renting "Southland Tales" so far. One who didn't listen to me, only to come back 3 hours later just so that he could agree, because he felt he owed it to me for trying. Believe me, people, see something else instead.

Good day,

Damn skippy! I watched 20 minutes.....then killed myself........in my mind!

Exactly, only I clung on to the entire 2 1/2 hour play-length in the desperate hope that it would ultimately go somewhere or do something, only to be thoroughly disappointed (especially once the 80s music started playing again).

20 minutes in... so that means you barely got to the part where the voice over narration seems its going to start ending, and then starts up again? I seem to recall that was around the 20 minute mark, but honestly time was a non-entity in this one.

I realized I didn't need to bother with Southland Tales when I saw Donnie Darko.

That said, I'm always curious about The Rock's acting career. Seriously, when is he going to get a good role? The guy has the talent but no one's ever told him to try a serious supporting role. He needs to fire his manager and ramble, ramble, ramble...
