The action movie to end all action movies.
If an alien came down and asked you what an action movie was, what would you show them?

Mmmhh,... if it was an alien I'd say the first Die Hard.

If it was an alien, I would show it Aliens so that it could understand not only the perfect action movie, but our relative cultural acceptance of violence against Other and Marginalized forms.
(and hopefully set off a huge intergalactic war, as action movies teach me that that would be AWESOME!)

The Matrix, most likely. It's got lots of action but it isn't too violent (although the elevator sequence sometimes seems a little cold given that Neo and Trinity's victims don't know they're pawns of the agents.)
However:
Kill Bill would be good although it's talky and gory (Good action films for me focus on the guilty joy of fighting without relishing gore, torture, and punishment.)
Die Hard is good, old fashioned, all American mayhem.
And many of Jackie Chan's films are fun action films with great fights but a happy, zany spirit.

Definitely Die Hard......it gets better with every viewing.......great hero, great villain, great action, EXPLOSIONS, story is easy to follow and keeps you interested, never gets boring......yeah, it wins as # 1
I would also put The Matrix and Terminator 2 up there (although oddball will disagree on T2's story......can't deny the action though) because they both revolutionized the action genre......T2's effects still stand up today, and nothing came close to it until The Matrix

I know many people hate Michael Bay. He's made a lot of shit.
But, on the other hand, he did direct "The Rock".
That would probably be my choice.

The Rock is a quintessential action movie in that it takes a moment that is essentially the hero rolling back and forth on the ground, adds flames and some cool cutting, and suddenly it's bad-ass.

I'm gonna make myself very unpopular but I fukken resent The Rock.
Actually I hate EVERYTHING with Nicolas Cage in it....
....YES!!!!! Even Arizona Junior annd that other 'good movie' he made.

Do you mean Raising Arizona? Or is that a totally different movie? Well, although I hate Cage's movies with a passion 99% of the time, Raising Arizona is hysterical and you have to give it to the Coen Bros. for yet another display of comedic genius.
