Discussion of Bourne Ultimatum, The (2007)
[archived]
Discuss Bourne Ultimatum, The (2007) here. It's interesting to have seen this movie and the new James Bond flick in the same week, especially if you are not necessarily an action movie fan. These two films are alike in that they tend toward non-stop action with both leading men more like machines than human beings. Strangely, Jason Bourne behaves as a machine and, in fact, the story line points to the fact that his memory was erased and he was trained as a government assassin. However, Jason Bourne is running toward his past and his identity. James Bond is running away from his past. Both men bleed but Bond kills without regret and Bourne is sometimes overwhelmed by his killing ability.

Is the Bourne francise going to usurp the long-honored Bond francise? I think the initial similarity--James and Jason, Bond and Bourne--is more than a coincidence. It lends itself to much comparison.

I'm eager to find out where the Jason Bourne (David Webb) saga takes us. This film felt like the final installment of the francise even though the ending keeps all the options open. We already know where the Bond films go--on and on and on and on like the energizer bunny.

In any case, this was a fun flick. Much more fun than James Bond.

Movielens predicted 4 stars and I agree.
