Discussion of Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
[archived]
I just bought this on DVD from the internet. I'm so looking forward to seeing this! I had to buy this because it only cost 9.90 euros. The reviews I've read are nothing but praise, so what choice do I have...

I would like to know what you think about Bride of Frankenstein (1935).

I just watched this movie. What can I say? I'm honestly flabbergasted! This is what I would call perfect moviemaking. Everything, the sets, the script, the acting -- especially Ernest Thesiger as Dr Pretorius -- the lighting, the music etc. is done so indescribably well.

If it was possible I'd give six stars for this perfection.

Now, with 85 ratings it's still quite hard to tell which of the movies recommended by the system I will really like. So obviously I need some help, suggest me a movie.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a classic or a horror movie, but I will most certainly like a movie that is somehow thematically or technically related to Bride of Frankenstein.

I was browsing through IMDb keywords and it didn't take me long to find Akira. Then I browsed through the discussion forum for Akira and noticed that someone else had also noted some similarities between it and the [noLink]Frankenstein[/noLink] movies. Still I think it's quite odd to end up finding cult anime based on a classic horror film.

Well, I know you aren't looking for horror movies specifically and I believe that Bride of Frankenstein is a very unique experience. However, since the technical merits and the sense of gothic horror are what drew you in I would suggest you search out more James Whale first. The man was a master at this type of film and he had a great sense of detail. This may seem too obvious but have you seen the original Frankenstein (also by Whale)? If not, I'd suggest you start there and follow-up with The Old Dark House and The Invisible Man - two of my favorites by Whale.

Thanks for your suggestions, Jymkata. I was thinking of buying Frankenstein and Bride together, but the first one was sold out in no time, unfortunately.

Luckily I already knew that Bride of Frankenstein is rated higher by the critics than the first one, so I took the chance. Besides, I reckon some episodes from the first movie are repeated in the sequel to some extent. But if I'm correct, the atmosphere in Frankenstein is somewhat graver than in Bride, isn't it.

The next movie from the same director that I'll watch, will probably be Invisible Man, The, presuming it isn't released in an invisible format.

I added Una O'Connor (Minnie) to the cast because I thought she played an important, noteworthy role in the story.

For some reason the link isn't working, it can be clicked but no list appears. Could it be the apostrophe that's causing this?

I removed the apostrophe and now the link works.

...Now I've ordered both Frankenstein and Invisible Man, The (for 4.50 euros each).

Currently both of them are predicted 3.5, but if they are as stylized as the Bride, I'll probably rate them higher.
