Discussion of Dogville (2003)

This movie was an impulse buy, it will take a couple days to arrive. ML predicts 4 stars [edit: at the time of editing 3.5 actually :) ] for this movie. I'm a new member so I'm not exactly sure if the prediction is correct. I have rated only 43 movies so far. The question is: whom would you recommend it to? What other movie or movies would you recommend to a person who likes this one?
Dogville seems to be one of those movies you end up either loving or hating.

Firstly, I really enjoy live theatre although I go there far too rarely. The main theatre of our town is situated practically next door to my home. Close yet far, as they say. But I'm digressing already. Anyway, the magic of theatre lies specifically in its power to "alienate", and bring people together at the same time. Even some truly great movies seem to lack that particular quality. Or maybe I've only viewed run-of-the-mill movies so far.
So I decided to take a risk and bought a theatrelike picture with a presumably interesting story line. Let's hope I made the right choice. The only thing I'm worried about is that if like this one I will have to buy von Trier's whole production. ;)
From what I've understood a lot of the criticism against the movie comes from the thought von Trier is hypocritically judging the United States. I don't know, but I think if he's judging, he's judging any modern society, the United States of His Own Mind.
Well, I'll write more after I've seen the movie myself. :)
