I tend to love movies that show distinctions in historical eras. I'm actually really looking forward to 2046 -- the latest from Wong Kar-Wai.

My favorite film like this that I love is Orlando.

For most fun historical, I'd have to say Cleopatra.

My all-time favourite is a British TV-serial, I, Claudius (1976). Perhaps too playwright-y for certain cinematic sensibilities, but to my mind it's brilliance all the way through.

It can depend on what's meant by "historical." Would a completely fictional story set in a real historical setting count? How much of it needs to be real?

My favorite made-up story about real people would have to be Impromptu, which is very loosely inspired by the lives of George Sand (played by Judy Davis), Frederik Chopin (Hugh Grant), and Franz Liszt (Julian Sands), among others (Bernadette Peters, Emma Thompson, Mandy Patankin).

Historical would mean its placement in time and depicts real world characters.

Impromptu sounds like a cool movie. I'm putting it on my list. Thanks for the tip.

"Saving Private Ryan" was based in part on a true story, so that's good enough for me. I vote for it too.

Oh, and also the great "Amadeus".

Probably Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Ahem. I'm not really a fan of historical epics, although I do like Ridley Scott's recent work (Kingdom of Heaven and Gladiator) which have been criticised for being inaccurate. As a previous poster said, hardly any films are totally accurate.

What in the heck is historical about Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure? Did you mean hysterical?
