No prediction for Crank ?
[archived]
It seems that many recent additions to the system have collected sufficient ratings in order to generate a prediction. Is the movie similarity modelling routine been offline?

Also, I rather miss the line on a search results page that indicated how many movies qualified. Any possibility of getting that back any time soon?

I'm probably not understanding your meaning properly but just in case, a means to hide those titles that don't have a prediction? If so, just check the box that states "Exclude movies without predictions".

If not, ignore with apologies.

Well, since the problem has been resolved some time in the last couple of days, I'll just clarify:

Normally, movielens seems to only need about 10 ratings to place a movie in its similarity model. When I had posted the message, there were a couple of films that had moved well beyond that point (Crank), but similarities had not been calculated.

Likewise, there didn't seem to be many changes to my top picks, which are often very volatile. My speculation was that the routine that calculates the movie similarities had not run for a little while.

The other item I was curious about has also returned: "There are n movies matching your search:" and it sounds like some search glitches have also been fixed.

baa-- Good eye. The process was indeed offline. I found a bizarre garbage collection bug that only occurred with Java 1.5. I won't bore you with it.

This one was requested by a user, who emailed us and said, "Hey, can you bring that back?" and I did last night.

However, I am always fearful that fixing bugs will bring another 70 of them crashing onto my plate! ("No good deed goes unpunished") [:(] We have 205 issues currently filed, and it would be bad to get trapped into addressing them all!

Is this problem back? Seems like I can find a fair number of movies with more than 10 ratings but no prediction for me yet.

Also, what happened to the "Movies similar to this one" box on the Movie Detail page? It seems to be gone.

It looks like you are right...model building started failing again late last week. We'll look into it.

Sorry, similar movies is known to have been recently broken. Should be fixed soon.
