The WORST films EVER
[archived]
This should be fun...

Which films do you think should never have been made?

Here's my list, in no particular order (apologies in advance if I offend anyone!):

(Based on my lowest rated films)

The Haunting (1999)
The Next Best Thing (2000)
Get Shorty (1995)
Dumb & Dumber (1994)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (a.k.a. The Grinch) (2000)
Bringing Out The Dead (1999)
Bicentennial Man (1999)
Sommersby (1993)

No, not really. It's just that it was amazingly intense how much you despise those movies. I understand it happens from time to time, but it makes me remember that they are, afterall, just movies...

Yeah, I should have remembered that this was supposed to be a fun thread. I could change my list to The Dumbest Waste-of-Time Movies, but I wouldn't even know where to begin, what with so many well-qualified candidates.

Okay, here are a couple of misbegotten flicks that wasted my time and money:

Russian Ark (2002), a dull, stiff costume pageant in the Hermitage, filmed in a single two-hour take using a digital camera--a gimmick that probably sounded clever on paper, but the end result is reeeeeaaaalllllly boring and annoying.

Mad Dog Time (1996) was one of a slew of Pulp Fiction ripoffs that saturated our multiplexes and TV screens. Written and directed by Joey Bishop's extremely untalented son, it's a totally incoherent, witless mess. A lot of markers must have been called in to get people like Richard Dreyfus, Gabriel Byrne, Ellen Barkin, and a paralyzed Richard Pryor on board with this disaster.

Higher Learning (1995), a laughably bad, totally phony, completely tone-deaf drama about racial discord on a college campus. The most ridiculous, dimwitted racial stereotypes on parade, but not as a joke--director Singleton is completely serious and sincere, which almost makes this disaster funny.

The Underground Comedy Movie (IMDb link)

Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace

Speed 2: Cruise Control

Battlefield Earth

Beverly Hills Cop III

Chairman of the Board

With these movies, I can't even have a good time making fun of them. It's just sheer pain.

Unfortunately a bunch of people have posted to this thread with movies they personally disliked instead of what they would truly consider the worst movies ever (per the subject) if they stepped back and truly thought about it. No, this is not an elitist comment, but an objective one. Consider:

* Does the movie actually have a consistent plot that it adheres to from beginning to end?
* Did the director know how to block shots, edit scenes to maintain continuity, and light his subjects
* Did the actors emote instead of just reciting their lines?
* Was the movie ambitious instead of rehashing a tired, worn story?
* Did the movie treat the viewer with respect instead of assuming (s)he has the IQ of a turnip?

I could go on, but you see the point--that many of the movies people have listed do NOT violate these criteria while there are many, many yet to be listed that did. It therefore seems ludicrous to list Bringing Out The Dead, Blade Runner, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Fargo, and The Village when all of those were demonstrably not "the worst film ever". Each and every one was directed competently, had a followable plot, and was decently acted. Sure, you didn't like the movie but that unto itself does not make it "the worst ever".

Truly horrid films make you squirm in your seat and wince, knowing that you, an ameteur who has never made a film, could have done better. Things like Plan 9 From Outer Space, Leonard Part 6, Popeye, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. We're talking a whole 'nother league here. :-)

Perhaps, then, this thread should be retitled "The MOST INEPT films EVER".

My criteria for 'worst fillm' isn't so much if the filmaker is inept, but if I also feel anger toward the filmmaker for completely wasting my time. I can at least chuckle to myself while watching parts of Plan 9, so I'd give it a full star for that. Then again, since I can understand why people would rate it even higher for the same reason, I chose not to rate it at all on ML since it may skew my recommendations in a way that probably wouldn't help me. Right now it predicts I'd give it 3 stars.

But if you rated it, you'd set it up for future users that have your similar tastes that it'll be closer to the actual whole, along with refining your suggestions even more so that the suggestions should be (in theory) even closer to what you'd actually think about the movie.

How could I have forgotten Swordfish (2001)? What a colossally stupid and obnoxious piece of crap that thing was! Perfect timing, too: Portray a sociopathic terrorist as a suave, glamorous hero, just months before 9-11. Yeah, put Swordfish down as one of the worst major motion pictures to come out in quite some time.

Nightwatch (1997). Yeesh, what a gawdawful piece of sheit this is. Can't recall a a stupider, grosser movie that had such a first-rate cast. Ewan McGregor plays a nightwatchman who is suspected of raping corpses in the morgue. Nick Nolte plays a psychotic cop (there's a stretch!) 0.5 stars.

Speaking of Nolte playing psychotic cops, check out Q & A (1990), a laughably morose drama with Nick Boy playing a sadistic, secretly gay cop who runs around killing drag queens because they turn him on. So bad it's downright funny. 3 stars for its camp value.

Vargus. You're funny. Why do you spend so much time watching crap? Here's what I do if I don't like something. I 1) walk out and ask for my money back 2) press the stop button on my remote. Frankly, Movielens predictions are pretty good for me. That doesn't keep me from exploring while I'm at the video store but I've seen sooooo many films it's difficult for me to find much that interests me these days.

As for Nick Nolte--ever since that crazy mug shot with his hair sticking out all over the place--I can't take him seriously. Just the thought makes me laugh. I don't have to see a bad movie to do that. What a shame! He used to be a really good actor. LaLaLand can take people over if they're not careful.
