Napolean Dynamite is an interesting situation for me. I don't like it. It's not that I don't think it's bad, I just don't think it's good. It seems most other people love it.

I think it's because it's quotable, like Monty Python. Not that I'm insinuating Monty Python is bad, I just figure that quotibility is what tends to get in people's minds and let them enjoy themselves more, thus making something seem maybe better than it actually is...

What the heck am I talking about? No one cares.

Okay, enough of that.

Napoleon D is the silliest film I've ever seen. It is soooo high school. I know people think its quotable but, excuse me, Shakespeare is quotable. Napoleon D is a high school cult film and some people just never emotionally graduate. There ought to be a state test for aesthetics!

I'm sorry, but this whole reply smacks of elitism. People are allowed to like or dislike any movie they wish, I don't have a problem with that. What I _do_ have a problem with is when people insult/make fun of other people for having those opinions.

There were a few movies listed in previous posts that I thought were entertaining and I liked, but I'm not going to call them children for thinking such.

Napolean Dynamite was ABOUT kids in high school. Specifically geek/nerds that went through high school. This movie was (I believe) meant to convey what high school was like for those types of people. I also think the movie was filmed in a style in which a geek or nerd would have done it. Perhaps this is why you think this movie is "soooooo high school." If that is the case, then I think they accomplished what they set out to do.

By the way, I liked Napolean Dynamite and so has everyone I know (who have seen it.) I'm certanly not going to change my opinion of the movie (and nobody else should) simply because Sumytra1 thinks you have the emotional maturity of a teenager. Rejoice in your emotional immaturity and keep on quoting ND!

  Okay, okay, a few points...

Yeah, asking for an "aesthetics" test on something because it's about high school is kind of a strong objection in a bad way. I mean, look at Breakfast Club... that is a GREAT movie.

As Napoleon Dynamite IS a high school movie, a lot of what Dudaman says is true too, but I still don't think it's a very good high school movie. It runs very dated high school stereotypes. I mean, quite a few people said to me, "Yeah, I like know someone who was EXACTLY like Napoleon!" but he's still such a flat, two-dimensional character. All of them are, really... It has it all, the jock, the cheerleader and her friends, all of it without any real sense that they're trying to portray anything about them except, "Hey, aren't they funny!"

I don't know what you meant by "Shakespeare is quotable," Sumytra1, but if it makes any point to the discussion, I don't really care for Shakespeare very much. But whatever.

But anyways, please, please stop quoting Napoleon Dynamite. Just saying from the viewpoint of a person who really does not enjoy it when people incessantly quote things until whatever value those things had have become null and void from excessive overexposure.

Electra - Not nearly enough action. She's from a comic book give us some more action. Too much sitting around deciding what to do. The only thing I can think of at the moment

I have a unique viewpoint for Napoleon D. I'm a high school English teacher and we talked about that film in my class. The class was divided on whether they liked it or not. I leaned toward those who did not like it.

I feel strongly about aesthetics that is why I use popular culture in my classroom so young people can learn to differentiate between the beautiful and the not so beautiful in all the art forms from film to dance.

And by the way, passionate people have strong points of view. Its a good thing not a bad thing.

I agree with you 100%.

Listen, I'm not trying to start a flame war or make enemies; I just feel that everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Personally, I don't think it was a particularly great film, but I did find it entertaining. Whenever I set out to watch a movie I first try to figure out what I want to get out of it. Do I want to be entertained or do I want to understand the message the movie is trying to convey.

Once I figure this out my mind goes into the appropriate mode. If I want to be entertained, I don't think too much. I want to relex and have a good time. If I want to "get the message" of a movie my mind goes into a totally different mode. Like reading a book, I concentrate on everything little thing. Dialogue, lighting, color, scene composition, etc. With these types of movies I expect a lot more than the entertaining movies.

I can continue with that line of thought, but it is totally off-topic. Anyway, I just realized that I never stated the movies I thought were the worst. Off of the top of my head I come up with:
1) The Net
2) Swordfish
3) Speed 2

Yeah, well there's a difference between being passionate and coming on a little too strong. On the Internet, it's hard to tell what with lack of proper voice levels and facial cues and hand gestures. It's just a good thing to try to really think about what you're trying to say and choose your words wisely on an Internet forum.

So far, the beginnings of this forum have been pretty good. It seems most people here generally care about actually saying something of worth and not really acting like trolls. I hope it stays like that.
