Top 5 things wrong with Star Wars Ep. III
[archived]
Needless to say, I didn't enjoy the movie. Here's why:

1) Anakin's conversion to the dark side was the whole point of the film and I just didn't buy it. Instead of giving one really good reason why he turns, Lucas gives us 3 or 4 small reasons (a 'possible' cure to Padme's 'possible' death, Jedi Council not respecting Anakin's greatness, a 'possible' affair between Padme and Obi Wan, etc.), which dilutes the narrative power. I just didn't buy that all this was worth killing kiddie Jedis for.

2) Why did Obi Wan just leave Anakin dying and burnt on the lava rock? Surely mercy-killing fits in with the Jedi code, because it's not done out of anger but out of compassion and goodness. But even if, for some cowardly reason, he couldn't bring himself to put his friend out of his misery, why not make an effort to rescue him or summon medical help? Instead he just walks away -- was Obi filled with that much hate or indifference towards his former pupil/friend?

3) Anakin turning against Padme. He did this all for her and then he chokes her so quickly? It's because he already turned to the dark side you say. But then, later, why are the first words out of his Vader mask, "Is Padme safe? Is she [*gulp*] alright?" Whatever.

4) Vader coming to life, stepping off the table and saying "Nooooooooooooo!" This shout was so over-the-top as to be laughable. The stuff of cartoons. Does Lucas not have a working crap-detector in his brain? Come on! Imagine Vader asking about Padme, finding out she's dead, then being subtly "pleased" about it? Now that'd be evil. Instead we get wuss-vader, something I never wanted to see.

5) Enough with the lightsaber battles! I think we had six of them in this movie and they are all boring. Lucas's thought process: How to show up Darth Maul's double lightsaber battle... I know, four lightsabers! The only creative fight scene was when The General cracked the cockpit glass and tried to suck the fragile humans out into mericless space -- now that was clever.

Actually I'd say that there was only one thing wrong with the movie: George Lucas.

Seriously, I'm not a Star Wars fan but I was surprised that I liked this one so much. It was probably because I'd never seen a Star Wars movie on the big screen. That and I can almost always enjoy a film just for its visuals if they're good enough.

But you know what? The real problem with all of the Star Wars sequels is that they were handled by George Lucas instead of the people who really should have been handling them: the Star Wars fans. If I were in his position I'd have settled for executive producer and have found the most talented Star Wars fans in Hollywood to handle the direction and writing aspects--Kevin Smith comes to mind. Had Lucas trusted them to make these movies they would have eclipsed the original trilogy.

I'd agree that others would've handled it better (just take a look at Empire Strikes Back for proof). So why didn't he? Either Lucas wanted to make a great bunch of movies in order to prove the doubters (of his talent) wrong, or he wasn't aware of the doubters and believes all the yes-men he surrounds himself with and thinks he is talented.

Truth be told, if I was in Lucas's employ and making a good deal of money at the cost of biting my tongue about his shortcommings, I'd sure as hell do it. "Great job, Mr. L!"

And second truth be told, the artistic design of the new Star Wars films IS very impressive.

For dispenser: I so agree with you on all counts. Your sensitivity to the plot is much keener than mine, I might say.

I don't like the kid who played Annekin. He had two facial expressions: 1. Everything's cool and 2. Watch me tilt my head downwards so you see my eyebrows first and then my eyes look at you through my eyebrows. The second was supposed to make him look like a dark side inhabitant.

And completely anachronistic. I seriously can't see the two trilogies really existing in the same Universe as each other. Episodes 4-6 were shadowy, mysterious, a neat place to explore and think of industry and the future. Episodes 1-3 were glossy, flashy, glossy, and bright... and glossy. It's like the difference between The Man Who Wasn't There and Intolerable Cruelty, except the Coen Brothers didn't try to say that Intolerable Cruelty was a prequel to The Man Who Wasn't There, because it's obviously not.

A lot of people told me, "The first half of the first movie starts out in the prequels' Universe, and the second half connects it to the old Star Wars' Universe." I didn't see it. And while technology situations can easily be given as an excuse, mise en scene can't.

Ok first of all I'm a Star Wars fan. Yes there are some problems with Episode 3. But George Lucas letting someone else make the prequels get out of here. Star Wars is his creation as if he's going to let some fanboys take control. And the notion that the prequels could ever eclipse the originals is absolutely absurd. No matter how good they could have been they would never have been better than the originals because they are classics that have been around since 1977. Too many lightsabre fights? Lightsabre duels is part of what makes Star Wars what it is and you thought there where to many?

I agree with the idea of letting "fans of Star Wars" making the prequels is a pretty absurd idea. But keep in mind that The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi weren't directed by George Lucas. That's important.

You can overdo too much of a good thing. Sugar is tasty and brings smiles to people's lips. Too much of it makes you sick. By the same token, sugar is good, soup is also very good, but if you mix sugar and soup, you get Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: disgusting thick glop that makes me cringe to even consider consuming it again.

2. Watch me tilt my head downwards so you see my eyebrows first and then my eyes look at you through my eyebrows. The second was supposed to make him look like a dark side inhabitant.

That downward "stare through furowed brows" is a classic Stanley Kubrick move ("A Clockwork Orange", "Full Metal Jacket"). It's used in comic books all the time, too. Enough already.

One thing that keeps coming to mind is that this cast of actors is actually very talented and yet the majority of the performances came off as wooden and uninteresting. When that happens, I think it's an indication of poor direction. But somehow, the man who played Senator Palpatine was able to pull off a wonderful performance that always held my attention. He reminded me of "Q" in Star Trek: TNG and how he stole every scene he was ever in.

And the notion that the prequels could ever eclipse the originals is absolutely absurd. No matter how good they could have been they would never have been better than the originals because they are classics that have been around since 1977.

I really didn't need or expect it to match or better the originals -- I just wanted a coherent story with characters I believed and cared about. I'm a fan. It wouldn't have taken much to get me behind the movie, but I didn't even get that.

Too many lightsabre fights? Lightsabre duels is part of what makes Star Wars what it is and you thought there where to many?

True, lightsaber battles are probably the most "Star Warsie" thing there is, but to each his own. For instance, you may consider 17 lightsaber battles too much. For me, it was 6.

I think that disparity was intentional. Two universes: One when the Republic was intact and a glossy, gay time was had by all, the other a grungy wasteland struggle under the Empire. I kinda dig that. However, I agree that the shadowy, mysterious world is much more memorable. Dirty panels on snow-speeders rule!
