What's the last thing you watched and what did you rate it?
[archived]
Should be a simple discussion exercise...

I saw Ringu. I didn't find it that interesting, but it was okay. I rated it 3 out of 5 stars. Since I haven't seen the remake, I now know that I don't really intend to.

Bluebeard. It was just good enough that it wasn't bad enough to be campy. Oh well... 2.5 stars.

Alfie (2004) - I suspect we were watching because of the latest incarnation of Nannygate.

My college boss was a huge fan of the original, always spouting lines, clearly wishing he could emulate the character. I haven't seen the original, but in this one, it doesn't take long for the character to start getting reflective about his life, and thus, more boring.

There are too many artificial gimmicks (massive one word advertising signs that reflect the tone, except that they stop appearing halfway through), the editing was annoying. And this was a first for me: they included photos of the directors, producers, writers, etc. in the final credits. I'm sorry, but this crowd did not deserve that type of innovation.

Movielens average is 2.9, but prediction was 2.5. I went down to 2.0

Lethal Weapon 4 showed the crew in the credits.

I just saw Key Largo. Brilliantly amazing. Very enjoyable, 4.5 stars (loses a half a star for being a bit clunky at parts, but otherwise is perfect).

Dopamine. Standard indie stuff. Ho hum. ML predicted 2.5 stars and that's what I gave it.

A trio of Cagney movies tonight:

Angels with Dirty Faces
The Roaring Twenties
White Heat

ML predicted 4 stars each and, again, that's what I gave each.

Shattered Glass -- Movielens predicted 4 and that's what I gave it. So many actors in that movie that I would watch in anything. Except for Hayden Christensen, alas.

Battleship Potemkin. Movielens predicted 3.5, I gave it four. Overall, the restoration is pretty choppy, and it doesn't look very good, but it still is pretty powerful.

Just watched The Experiment, rated it a 5. I rated it a five because it's a rare occassion when i sit down to a movie and get the kind of strong feelings that i got from this movie.

I saw Castle In The Sky last week, too, and i thought that when i have children hayao miyazaki flicks are going to be the ones that my children are going to get to watch.

What else... I guess i saw Million Dollar Baby. i thought it was a solid flick. Wasn't fantastic, but was nice to see a solid end-to-end picture.

The Princess and the Warrior -- Pushed by both my sister-in-law and the Sourcelight recommender. Interesting, cool music, but I didn't get engaged in it. Which is too bad, I wanted to like it. Dug that cool monorail, though.

Average was 3.8, prediction was 3.5, gave it 2.5

  The Corpse Vanishes

Another Bela Lugosi B-horror flick makes you question, "Hmm, does Bela Lugosi ever play a role without making that silly grin?" As it goes, the middle part of this film was actually kind of good, but the beginning and end were soooo bad that I'm forced to give it a 1.5... only it's not on Movielens, so I guess I won't be giving it much of anything.

Sometimes I Dream in Color

You won't find this because my friend and exmanager made it and it's a short, so it won't get on Movielens. However, I thought I'd mention it anyways as he is sending it around short film circuits and all... 2.5 stars, regular student-film selection.

The Wild Bunch

At first this movie does not seem good at all, and then you kind of realize what Sam Peckinpah was trying to do... suddenly this film is awesome. I think I like it because I hate Westerns. 5 stars, Movielens predicted 3.5.

I saw March of the Penguins in an art house last evening with a 4 1/2 year old. She was full of questions in a very whispery voice and ate all my popcorn.

It's an amazing survival of the fittest story. The photography was at it's best when it caught all the extreme contrasts of Antartica (I think that's where it was filmed). This is a black and white film without the sunsets, a speck of orange feathers, the Auroraborealis, and blue ice water. Humor was thinly peppered throughout.

Movielens didn't provide a prediction for me. I would give it a 4.
