What's the last thing you watched and what did you rate it?

Should be a simple discussion exercise...

I saw Ringu. I didn't find it that interesting, but it was okay. I rated it 3 out of 5 stars. Since I haven't seen the remake, I now know that I don't really intend to.

  Madagascar 2

At first I thought I was missing something because I hadn't watched Madagascar 1. Then the movie ended and my roommate, whose idea it was in the first place, said, "Do you guys all hate me? Because I noticed that nothing that happened on screen had anything to do with anything else, and it was hilarious." Glad she said it first.

It's just so damned bouncy. All of the characters look like rubber toys, and when they speak or move it's like a hand is squeezing them. Despite that, it manages to milk a bit of humor out of these hilarious penguin characters and the occasional hilarious digression. The rest of it is a mixed bag of mostly over-used and unfunny jokes. Some random annoying creature running after them the entire time, chased by like a shark or something, was the exact tipping point of this sinking boat.

The animation is pretty mixed. Most of it is lazy, but the occasional water effect and a lot of the movement was neat. The characters themselves look TERRIBLE. For instance, the David Schwimmer giraffe guy, they obviously spent a lot of time on his head and decided to pretty much ignore the rest of his body. All of the animals are made out of primary shapes, which isn't too bad of a style if they weren't doing the rubbery movement thing, which made them then look like giggling cubes of Jell-O. This movie was pretty much as hard to watch as it was to laugh with.

I'm not one for complaining about the ADD nature of modern media, but in some ways this movie was downright exhausting, like watching a kid spin around and around after beating his head continually on a tree-truck for an hour. I could do with an alternative edit of the movie where they take all the penguin bits and a few Sasha Baron Cohen one-liners and just cut out all the rest of that other stuff.

1.5 star.
