We are developing Mobile MovieLens and we need your help!
|
|
The MovieLens redesign team has been working hard on improving the site. From our last informal forum survey, we learned that some of our users wish to visit MovieLens on their mobile devices. We know this is the trend and more users will need a mobile version of MovieLens. So we have started designing the mobile MovieLens and we would love to know your opinions!
Please help us by taking this short survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/mobilemovielens (3 questions, 1-2 minutes) and telling us your preferred features in MovieLens. Your opinions are important and valuable to us!
Thanks! Chuan MovieLens redesign team member Feb 20th 2012

The functionality and programming of the website is pretty good, and the rating database is pretty awesome. I only real grip about the website is that its ugly really ugly. Unfortunately that was the the thing that made me hesitant to view the website. I would suggest logo design instead of plain text. A change color scheme maybe I personally like contrasting colors

I agree with the comment that the aesthetics are lacking. I like the clean look, but you should go for gmail, not craigslist. In order to get usage, it needs to be inviting, and aesthetics are part of that.
I want to see a list of actors and the movie poster on the movie details page. instead, i have to click into IMDB to get at this info.
For me, the tag cloud is overkill, perhaps let users opt in or out of the more complex features that crowd the experience. I don't doubt that these features are useful in gathering data to create a more meaningful algorithm, but they are advanced features that should be brought in once users have put in some time.
Lastly, how do you get users to rate movies, tag movies, etc? Are you hoping that people will do it just to get better recommendations? Some will. it may help to do something simple, like give each member a score based on how many movies they have rated versus the person with the highest rating. Gameify it. Is there a way for the site, or the mobile device to somehow figure out when a user just saw a movie? if i rent or stream or physically go to the movies - that's when you want to strike while the iron is hot. Not sure how MovieLens would know that - just thinking.
Very cool project. Keep it up!

A section on the homepage with predictions of movies currently playing in nearby theaters or upcoming titles which the logged in user has yet not seen or rated.

Id like to see more than three tags for a film so I can see more of other peoples thoughts about a film and also because I don't want to necessarily say a tag is bad but I would be able to choose the tags I like best.
