What is the point of adding films which have a release date in summer of 2012?
|
|
During the last couple of days someone or someones have added few big name films which have release dates in August 2012 or so. What is the point of adding such films at this time? I see no reason for it.
I'm hoping the person(s) responsible for them would see this and consider not adding any more. Add them close to the release dates. Thank you.

This has now become one of the more ridiculous things I've seen happen on movielens; your complaint has actually gotten those movies removed from the site. All of those movies where added and ready to be rated when the movies came out now it looks like they will have to be resubmitted unless they are just hidden for the time being. Most of the complaints about the site are that it is hard to add movies this has actually resulted in fewer additions not more. Whats worse is that these were added by volunteers, I looked at all of them out of curiosity and there was nothing wrong with them, all the information was correct there was no legitimate reason to get rid of them. If you are going to as for help from volunteers you should just be grateful.
For the record I added Hunger Games, I also added movies like Violet & Daisy and Coriolanus; they are all movies I'm thinking about seeing in the theater and would like some feedback from this site if I'm not one of the first to go out and watch them.
I think it would be most useful if users with a history of submitting accurate movie information were able to add as many movies as they cared to, until that is the case I see no use in undoing the work that had been voluntarily done. I'd be more than happy to add in all movies that are in IMDBs coming soon but seeing as I have a limited amount of submissions I can make every month I have to pick and chose what movies I add.

Adding films 9 months before they come out serves no purpose. Somebody actually had already rated one of them. I don't think that helps in giving accurate recommendations since there is no way that person has seen the film.
I see Hunger Games has been removed, but the other two you mentioned are still listed. Hunger Games is 4 months away so it probably deserved to be pulled, sorry.
I do however agree it is too difficult to add films here which results in even new films sometimes not being available.

It is certainly possible to see movies before their release date by attending film festivals and private screenings. For example, many of the big "yet-to-be released" films were already screened at the Chicago International Film Festival last October. Anybody can buy a ticket to these films at the festival. In addition, Talk Cinema shows a series of yet-to-be released films in a number of American cities. You don't have to be an "insider" to attend--participation is open to the public.

Fine, maybe I'm wrong but like I said I would add every movie in IMDBs coming soon list each month if I could. I'm sure there are others that would do it too. It would certainly prevent things like the following; New Year's Eve (number one box-office draw over the weekend, not on movielens)from happening.
This is the only time I've ever checked that so unless it is a huge coincidence I'm sure it isn't the first time that has happened. Now maybe you don't like the movie, I have no intention of seeing it maybe you don't as well but the best thing for the site and the research is to get more people on the site not less. I can't imagine what a turnoff it would be if a person was looking for a movie recommendation site over the weekend and a site they stumbled on didn't have the movie they just went out and watched this wasn't some obscure movie either, this isn't something someone would shrug and think "it's not a big movie, I'll add it when I get a chance" this is a major movie. If it happened this weekend, again the only weekend I've ever looked, I'm betting it has happened before.
I've looked at the top rated movies; there are three movies on the first page that are not from the 1990’s. They are Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), Batman (1989), and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983). You have to go to page four before you find a movie from the 00’s and that is Lord of the rings. That tells me that movielens peeked in the 90’s and hasn’t recovered. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a part of the reason why.

SFdolon, I completely agree with you in regards to all movies that are opening soon should be added to movielens as soon as possible; I find myself adding movies that have already been released (in some cases as many as two weeks prior) on many an occasion. I think the point mcis81 was trying to make is that adding movies well in advance of their theatrical release date (the examples were of movies to be released in the summer of 2012) doesn't really help movielens or its users in getting the proper recommendations; adding movies that haven't been screened for critics yet let alone audiences doesn't do anything to improve movielens.
The only solution I can think of is that anytime a movielens user wants a movie to be added (and is unable to do it themselves) they should create a new Q&A topic highlighting said movie so that another user can add it; and on that note I've just added New Year's Eve.

Yup, that's basically my point fyodor. Personally I have no problem if a film is added before the actual release date if it's showing on a film festival, coming to theater next month etc.
One of the films in question was the new Bourne film, slated for August 2012 release and somebody had rated that already. I highly doubt it is showing in any form at this time.
So in short, if the release date is more than a month or so away and the film is not showing on any festivals etc. in my opinion it should not yet be added.
I do hope changes would be made to film adding. I like the suggestion of creating a topic so that someone else could add a film if the user can not do it themselves. Probably just create one post and use that for all to avoid cluttering the Q&A with dozens of posts etc. Anyway, I'd be happy to help out in that, if I can.

Movielens may not have peaked in the 90s, btw. Movielens was initially based on the EachMovie dataset which originated in the 90s (http://www.grouplens.org/node/76). Furthermore, when users sign up, they are asked to rate movies that have high numbers of ratings. Thus, it ends up being a self-perpetuating bias.
I thought that they used to filter out movies which hadn't been released yet (reached their U.S. theatrical release, as entered in the Movielens database) from showing up in searches.
